Biography
Alexander W. Friedrich is 41 years old and is since 2011 Professor and Chair of Medical Microbiology and Infection Prevention and Head of Department at the University Hospital in Groningen, The Netherlands. He studied human medicine from 1990-1997 at the Universities of Würzburg (Germany), Coimbra (Portugal) and Rome (Italy). He did his specialist training at the Institutes of Medical Microbiology and Hygiene of the University of Würzburg and the University Hospital Münster between 1998 to 2003. From 2003 to 2004 he was medical intern at the infectious disease unit of the internal medical clinic of the University Hospital Münster. In 2004, he became Specialist for Medical Microbiology, Virology and Infectious Disease Epidemiology, in 2005, he became Specialist in infectious disease (Infectiologist - DGI). From 2006 to 2010 he was senior physician at the Institute of Hygiene, head of unit for infection control and hospital hygiene, physician responsible for the microbiological laboratories of the Institute of Hygiene. In 2006, he made his habilitation (Privatdozent) and Venia legendi for the subject "Hygiene and Microbiology" at the Medical Faculty of the University of Münster. In 2011 he was appointed to full professor and chair in the current position. His research focus lies in the broad spectrum of infectious disease and infection control pointing out the need of close co-operation between academic and public health institutions. His research activities comprise basic and clinical-microbiological research in the field of zooonotic and food-borne infections, as infections due to Shiga Toxin-producing E. coli and applied research in the field of molecular epi- and pathotyping strategies ("genetic fingerprint") in order to combat effectively micro-organisms that are cause of hospital acquired infections
